2008 Interns/Trainees

What is an MFT Registered Intern?

An MFT Registered Intern is a person who possesses a BBS approved Master's degree and is registered with the Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) of the State of California. This registration permits the person to do counseling with clients while under the direct weekly superivsion of a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Psychologist, or Board Certified Psychiatrist.

A Registered Intern is in the process of gaining 3000 hours of experience, which, when approved by the BBS and coupled with the Master's degree training, will allow that person to sit for the MFT licensing exam. A Registered Intern is not a Licensed Marriage & Famil Therapist yet.

Registered Interns may work with clients to the level of their experience and within the scope of the MFT license. A Registered Intern will have a registration number that looks like this example: I.R.# AB999999 (I.R. 2 letters followed by 6 digits).

MFT Registered Interns may not:

  • Be paid by the cleint. All monies must be paid to the employer whether an agency or a licensed practitioner. The Registered Intern receives wages, if any, only from the employer, not from the client.
  • Maintain an office separate from their employer, i.e.; must see clients and receive telephone calls at the same location as their employer does.
  • Advertise themselves without clearly indicating that they are working as an employee of a licensed practitioner or an approved agency.

A trainee is a person who is in the process of obtaining a Master's degree and is a member of the State and local CAMFT organzations.
