Speakers:  Spencer Posey, LMFT, Jorden Groenink, AMFT, & Jenean Cervantes, AMFT

Course Description: 
This course aims to provide mental health practitioners with an examination of sex addiction and the corresponding trauma of betrayal. The focal point of the session will predominantly encompass a definition of sex addiction, an outline of its typical treatment trajectory, and an exploration of substantiated interventions, including formal disclosure methodologies. The latter segment of the presentation will be dedicated to cultivating a heightened comprehension of the partner's perspective in the context of sex addiction. This endeavor will encompass a survey of betrayal trauma, coupled with a broad treatment framework. The culmination of the presentation will allow attendees an opportunity for interactive engagement through a dedicated Q&A session.

Instructor Information: 

Spencer Posey, LMFT was born and raised in Ventura County. He began practicing in the field of mental health in 2019 as a Graduate intern at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. Spencer graduated from Pepperdine University with an M.A. in Clinical Psychology in the Summer of 2020 and has been practicing at the Center for Integrative Change since September of 2020. 

Prior to starting in the field of mental health Spencer studied Christian ministries at Biola University. Outside of working with his clients, Spencer’s favorite job was slinging drinks as a barista at a specialty coffee shop.  Spencer is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals.

Jorden Groenink, AMFT and APCC who graduated from Fuller Seminary in 2022 with an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy. Prior to that, Jorden pursued theology at Biola University, achieving her B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies in 2020. During her theological studies, it became evident to Jorden that her calling to assist those facing challenges within and outside the church would be most impactful in a clinical capacity. Amidst the challenges of a global pandemic and planning a wedding, she swiftly redirected her career trajectory. Presently, Jorden practices at the Center for Integrative Change and specializes in working with couples and betrayed partners. Her couples training includes Gottman Method Couples Therapy - Level 1 and Gottman Treating Affairs and Trauma course. Additionally, she holds the title of Associate Partner Trauma Therapist (APTT) from the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP).

Jenean Cervantes, AMFT and CPC. She earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University of Santa Barbara in 2022 and her life coaching certification from iPEC Coaching Institute in 2017.
-Jenean has experience working with adults and couples through life transitions, parenting, attachment, and communication. She often treats adult men, who are partnered, on issues of childhood trauma, intimacy, infidelity, substance use, sex addiction, emotional regulation, and partner communication.

Jenean has received training from the Gottman Institute on The 7 Principles of Making a Marriage Work. She has also received training in Terry Real’s RLT (Relational Life Therapy) training Level 1, which focuses on restoring closeness in relationships through cultivating essential relational skills. Jenean is also trained in trauma-informed mindfulness techniques, attachment-based and psychodynamic modalities.

Educational Objectives:
Describe the clinical profile of porn/sex addiction. Gain understanding of appropriate differential diagnoses and other clinical concerns. Increase compassion for clients living with porn/sex addiction and betrayal trauma. Be able to define and identify betrayal trauma. Understand when it is appropriate to refer to a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist or Certified Partner Trauma Therapist.

Measurable Learning Objectives: 
Participants will be able to identify the ten diagnostic criteria of sex addiction and be able to distinguish between healthy sexual behaviors and addictive patterns.

  1. Participants will gain insight into at least two evidence-based interventions for treating sex addiction, including the formal disclosure process and at least one additional therapeutic technique.

  2. Participants will explore the psychological and emotional impact of betrayal trauma on partners of individuals struggling with sex/porn addiction and will be able to name 12 areas of impact.

  3. Participants will be able to name the five stages of betrayal trauma recovery.

These learning objectives aim to provide participants with a well-rounded understanding of the topic and equip them with actionable knowledge to apply in their professional practice.
